November 2017: Urmi now has its FSSAI license

Founded by Atul Ltd in 1953, Urmi works to empower women. Fresh and traditionally prepared spices are the identity of the organisation. Women from surrounding villages are engaged in drying, pounding, blending and packaging of these spices. Pounding gives a distinct aroma, appearance and flavour which differentiates the products from those ordinarily available. Chilli powder (mild, medium and hot), coriander cumin powder, garam masala, pickle masala, tea masala and turmeric powder are its key products.

With its FSSAI license, Urmi endeavours to make its products available to more people and expand its reach.

October 2017: New power plant inauguration


On the auspicious day of Laabh Panchami 2017, Atul inaugurated its new power plant – the largest project in the history of the Company.

The plant’s boilers, coal plant, turbine and ash handling units are DCS operated, and the entire facility is managed by a team of about 80 persons.

At 106 m, the RCC chimney built as part of this project is the tallest structure at Atul.

September 2017: National Aquatic Meet at Atul Vidyalaya

The 21st Association of Schools for the Indian School Certificate (ASISC) – National Aquatic Meet was held on September 30th and October 1st, 2017. The event was hosted for the fourth time by Atul Vidyalaya under the sponsorship of Atul Ltd. Swimming enthusiasts from different ASISC schools of the country and overseas made the two day event a success. Races were organised for freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and the butterfly stroke. Maharashtra was declared as the series winner.

September 19, 2017: Visit of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev to Atul – Rally for Rivers


Along with his team, Sadhguru is travelling by road from Kanyakumari to the Himalayas as part of Rally for Rivers, an initiative to spread awareness about the depletion of rivers and an urgent need to save them. Atul, located on the banks of River Par, was a stopover on this journey. Students of Atul Vidyalaya gave Sadhguru a warm welcome by chanting the nadi stuti. He also planted a date palm in the school campus.

July 2017: Bulk Chemicals and Intermediates – Sodium sulphate recovery plant commissioned

Sodium sulphate is a byproduct of Resorcinol; it forms part of the effluent stream during the manufacture of Resorcinol. The recently installed facility helps recover Sodium sulphate through adiabatic crystallisation and filtration. Once recovered, the product is reused as a raw material to manufacture Resorcinol.

Pilot launch of retail module at Valsad

Polymers Retail had a pilot launch of its retail module from April-June 2017 in Valsad, Pardi and Udwada. While it has been challenging for the Business to move from a no presence zone to a significant presence zone, the experience has been a great motivation.

A summary of the post launch outcomes is as follows:

  • Increase in market share from 1% to 19%
  • Increase in sales by 1,300% in Q1, 2018 over the same period of last year
  • Increase in coverage of outlets from 27 to 94 numbers
  • Increase in brand visibility

May 2017: Atul – AkzoNobel joint venture

AkzoNobel and Atul have announced their intention to jointly invest in the production of Monochloroacetic acid (MCA) in India. This will include setting up a world class MCA plant at the first manufacturing site of Atul located in Valsad (Gujarat). Each partner will hold a 50 percent stake.

This partnership will build on the status that Atul has as a leading global supplier of 2,4-D, a herbicide that uses MCA as a key raw material, and the leading global position that AkzoNobel has in the MCA market, with plants in the Netherlands, China, Japan and the USA. MCA is an essential building block in the chemical industry and is used in a wide variety of chemicals.

The partnership will use Chlorine and Hydrogen manufactured by Atul to produce MCA, taking advantage of the existing infrastructure that Atul has and the leading eco-friendly hydrogenation technology supplied by AkzoNobel. The plant will produce enough MCA to meet the captive requirement of Atul; AkzoNobel will market the rest of it, primarily in India.

April 2017: Atul declared a ‘cashless township’

On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Niti Aayog’s Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana declared Atul Ltd township in Valsad among the seventy five ‘cashless township’ of India, as more than 75% digital mode of payments were processed instead of cash. The townships selected for the launch have been subjected to independent third party assessment by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) and only those townships which have reported more than 80% of the total number of transactions in the township being done through digital modes of payments during the review period are included in this list.
