An insoluble black food color used in confectioneries, icing, baked goods and ice cream. The product is also known as vegetable black, carbon black, or carbo medicinalis vegetabilis. It is produced through steam activation (charring) of vegetable fibers; raw materials used include peat, nut shells, wood and cellulose residues.
